To keep a proper lookout, a vessel operator should prioritize watching for navigational hazards. This is crucial for maintaining safety on the water, as it involves being vigilant for potential obstacles such as buoys, other vessels, floating debris, and shallow areas that could pose a risk of collision or grounding. Staying aware of the surrounding environment helps ensure the operator can make timely decisions to avoid hazards and promote the safety of all aboard.

While good fishing locations, listening to the vessel's engine, and listening to passenger conversations are important aspects of a boater's overall experience, they do not fulfill the legal and practical requirement of maintaining a proper lookout. Good fishing locations can be sought at appropriate times when navigating is less complex, listening to the engine is part of monitoring vessel performance, and listening to passengers contributes to a comfortable atmosphere, but none of these directly address the immediate need for awareness of navigational safety.
